An Earth Without People
Article Title: Life in the Ocean

A: List the major ideas, concepts or key points- point by point
Without the existence of humans on Earth, physical infrastructure will crumble immediately, according to Alan Weisman. To start off, the first thing to turn off is the power. With the power off, subways will flood. Flooding will cause corrosion and will destroy support and crater streets. The corrosion will also destroy buildings. These buildings will push seeds into cracks on streets, which will then cause a small ecosystem. All of North America will be a giant habitat for deer, and NA will become a forest. To really know what the world will be like without humans, people need to visit abandoned places to see how things looks there now. Although there are many negative affects with the absence of humans, there is one positive affect: Earth will be in a healthier state.

The article says that power will be the first thing to go out. I think that with power running, then existence of these buildings would last longer, because power would prevent flooding and corrosion of support. With the absence of humans, I think it won't benefit any house pets. I think house pets would have a hard time finding food to eat. They would have to resort to food in the trash. In contrast, I believe that wild animals will survive longer than any house pet, because of adaptability and experience in the wild. With the experience they know what to look for and where to look for it.
So what?
Without humans, everything built by them will fall apart. Plants will grow anywhere and everywhere.
Says who?
Alan Weisman
What if...?
There was an absence of all animals in the world? What food will we have to resort to?
What does this remind me of?
The video 'Life After People', also talks about what happens after the absence of all humans.

A: List the major ideas, concepts or key points- point by point
- Large parts of physical infrastructure will crumble almost immediately.
- Without street cleaners and road crews, grand boulevards and superhighways will crack and buckle in a matter of months.
- Over decades, houses and office buildings will collapse.
- Ordinary items will resist decay for an extraordinarily long time.
- Overwhelming infrastructures that seem indestructible are fragile and still exists because of the humans that it depends on.
- If humans disappeared, the first thing that would happen is the power will go off.
- Power comes from nuclear or coal-fired plants that have automatic fail-safe switches
- The switches make sure they don't go out of control when no humans are monitoring the power.
- When power goes off the pump stops working, the subway will fill with water. In 48 hours, a lot of NYC will be flooded.
- Sewers will overflow. Corrosion will happen, beams will collapse. Streets would begin to crater.
- Streets will revert to surface rivers
- Cities will begin to develop its own ecosystem. The cracks will widen from the seeds inside.
- To see how the world would be without humans, go to abandoned places.
- To really understand a world w/o humans, learn the world before humans evolved.
- Without humans, NA would become a giant deer habitat. Forests will reestablish across the continent.
- Large herbivores will evolve.
- With humans gone, the Earth will be in a healthier state.
