The Fish and the Forest
A: List the major ideas, concepts or key points- point by point
•Salmon-catching bears fertilize forests with the partially eaten carcasses of their favorite food.
•Fishery in Alaska reduce the “economic damage” the predators might be wreaking on salmon populations.
•Scientific interest in the interaction between bears and salmon died down.
•Bears the forests.
•Young salmon are about 20 grams
•Juveniles die at sea.
•Adult male chum salmon contains an average of 130 grams of nitrogen, 20 grams of phosphorus and more than 20,000 kilojoules of energy.
•Salmon are a crucial resource for the bears be- cause the survival.
•bears often carry their salmon catch into the forest, to avoid confrontation.
•Usually eat only the most nutritious part of the fish and discard the rest, remains support a hierarchy of animals and plants. Eat only 25% of the salmon.
•Salmon carcasses has captured the attention of fishery, and forest managers.
•Both the salmon and the bear are important to the ecosystem.
•In areas where salmon runs are seriously reduced or wiped out, state agencies are now transporting salmon carcasses.
B: Summarize the AUTHOR’s main point or idea- at LEAST 1-2 paragraphs
The population of bears are slightly decreasing, and there was not an accurate reason why. Scientists are interested in the interaction between bears and salmon died down. Bears actually fertilize the forests, by discarding partially eaten salmon carcasses. Result of a large predators bring valuable marine-derived nutrients, from the salmons. Salmon are a crucial resource for the bears because the survival and reproductive success depends on the amount of fat they can deposit in the late summer and fall. The bears carry their salmons to stream bank, to avoid confrontation. They only eat the nourishing part of the salmon, they rarely eat the whole fish. Bears eat more salmons than they eat. But by taking them into the forest, killing many of the fatter salmon, carrying the nutrient loaded fish to the forest, and abandoning the carcass with most of the biomass remaining. Slugs and other invertebrates colonize the carcasses almost immediately and deposit their eggs there, and some other eat the remains.

Salmons and Bears play a mayor role in the ecosystem. It’s surprising that the only animal that doesn’t eat everything that he caught, can help the environment. Even though the life span of a salmon it’s not the long, even while it’s dead it cans still help other. The bears aren’t the only animals that need of the salmon, and their recklessness helps the others, small animals. I was surprise when after knowing this, scientist decided help the bears. The bears are like us, they get more than they need or they want, but at least they help the environment--without noticing, but they help it. Also I hate seafood, but I didn’t know that the salmon could have more proteins that are need it.
What?
- Salmons and bears are a great combination.
- They help the ecosystem.
- Bears are like humans, They get as much as they can.
Say’s who?
Small organizations and researchers that are investigating about the diminishing of the bear population.
What if?
- Salmon didn’t have any effect on the ecosystem?
- The existence of the bear would not be possible.
- There would be another reason why the bear population would be diminishing.
What does it remains you of?
This reminds me of the movie Brother bear because it’s about bears that eat fish from a river, close to the meadow. Also because in the movie bears don’t always finish the fish they fished out.
